The Equality Act opposes discrimination in areas such as gender identity, sexual identity, and more. This bill is very much needed now, but the Trump Administration is against it.
Throughout Trump’s presidency, the LGBTQ community, alongside others, have been the target of prejudice. The administration has sided with religious freedom over human rights in most cases. The Religious Liberty Order was signed in May of 2017, which eased the religious political endorsement ban. This, and a variety of other bills have created hate with religion used as an excuse.
A senior administration official told the Washington Blade about the president opposing the bill, clarifying: “The Trump administration absolutely opposes discrimination of any kind and supports the equal treatment of all; however, this bill in its current form is filled with poison pills that threaten to undermine parental and conscience rights.”
The Equality Act would allow protections for the transgender community in all aspects of life, such as school and the work place. The act would eliminate religion as ammunition against people who identify as queer or transgender.
From allowing religion as an excuse for masked hate to banning transgender people from serving in the military, this is just another example of Trump’s attack on the queer community.
