To murse or not to murse?

We’re not talking about male nurses here – as hot as it is to think about life-saving guys in uniform. Instead, we set out to answer the question about a trend that’s equally as hot: the man purse. With options ranging from small satchels to larger messenger bags, it’s all about finding a bag that fits your style. “Murses” are not only fashionable, but they’re also a practical way for guys to tote their essentials around town. And once you start carrying one, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

According to Thom Vest, fashion/lifestyle expert and CEO of fashion PR firm 0Three Media, the real trick is finding a bag that’s versatile, comfortable, and – most importantly – one that complements your overall style without making you look like a cheap Nicole Richie impersonator. “No two bags are created equal, and so the best place to start is to figure out what its main purpose for you will be,” he said. “Are you a professional with more suits in your closet than Donald Trump, or a Boho-hipster with an affinity for Chuck Taylors and band tees? Once you figure out if it will be housing laptops and paperwork or vintage paperbacks and sketchbooks, it’s much easier to figure out which bag will suit your style and needs.”

For something really stylish, Vest suggests checking out Gunas (a luxury vegan handbag line with some great men’s bags). These bags have a seductive flair thanks to the custom hardware, Italian zippers and exquisite attention to detail.

“One of my favorite things about Gunas bags (aside from being vegan without looking like an incense-filled hackie sack) is that they have masculine, modern and stylish silhouettes that make an excellent addition to every man’s wardrobe,” he said.

However, if you want something a little more subdued, we found a great selection of bags by Manhattan Portage, Loungefly and Obey at Twist & Shout on East Colfax Ave. This local, independent music store carries a wide range of bags that are sure to fit your criteria. “Our opinion is it’s not a question of fashion or sexual orientation, but a necessary item because of its function,” said Peter Black, Twist & Shout’s dance and vinyl buyer. “We think the mini bags and tote bags from Manhattan Portage are perfect for carrying personal items and for day trips. Our personal favorite is the ‘Empire’ line of backpacks. They’re design conscious, so sleek and so functional.”

The main thing to consider when choosing a bag is its construction. You want to be sure you have a quality bag that will hold up over time.

“Clothes and accessories really do ‘make the man’ (or at the very least what others think of the man when they see him walking down the street), so keep in mind you usually get what you pay for,” Vest said.

As for the size of the bag, get what makes the most sense for you. If you’re on a bike more than your feet, then a messenger bag will probably do the job. However, if you’re using the bag for casual everyday errands, then a smaller, more compact bag is the way to go. “In our experience, the more room you have, the more stuff you will find to fill it,” Black said. “Keep it simple and carry only the essentials.”
