Swing & Sass on the High Seas: “Anything Goes”

“Anything Goes” is a wonderful example of classic musical theater, complete with incredible tap numbers, campy gags, mistaken identities, dubious happy endings, and foot-tapping music that will have you humming to yourself as you leave Littleton’s quaint Town Hall Arts Center.

American, passengers and crew alike sing and dance their way across the Atlantic from New York to England — all directed and choreographed by Denver-native favorite, Nick Sugar. His unique and creative approach always seem to add that something special to the shows he directs and his version of “Anything Goes” is no different — a fresh take on an old classic.

Musical Director Donna Debreceni, along with her gifted gang of musicians, brings to life all the great songs that prove Cole Porter is a true genius of musical theater, including “It’s De-Lovely,
“Friendship,” “I Get A Kick Out Of You,” “All Through The Night,” “You’re The Top,” “Blow, Gabriel, Blow,” and of course the title song “Anything Goes.”

Billy has stowed away to be near his love, Hope Harcourt, played by the talented Alison Mueller. Trouble is, her mother, Mrs. Harcourt (Judith Wyatt) is unaware of Billy’s courting and insists Hope marry the wealthy Lord Evelyn Oakleigh (Robert Janzen), to whom she is already engaged.

Together, aboard this zany love boat, are Public Enemy #13, Moonface Martin (Mark Shonsey) and his sidekick-in-crime Erma (Ellen Kaye). With the help of some elaborate disguises, tap-dancing sailors, and good old-fashioned blackmail, Reno and Martin join forces to help Billy in his quest to win Hope’s heart.

In downtown Littleton Colorado, on an ersatz luxury ocean liner, anything goes! And you should too. Catch “Anything Goes” at Town Hall Arts Center now showing through Dec. 28.
