Popular cartoon features lesbian exes
Adventure Time (previously reviewed here) is an animated show aired on Cartoon Network that’s extremely popular among children and adults. Recently at a press conference, voice actress Olivia Olsen who portrays the character Marceline informed an ecstatic crowd that the vampire queen had indeed once been in a relationship with the science-loving Princess Bubblegum.
Olsen admitted that the creepy fan art had been her first tip-off, but her suspicions were confirmed by show creator Pendleton Ward with a quick “You know they dated, right?”
Rumors have persisted about the animated characters’ relationships for some time, and an episode that delved into their romance was allegedly scrapped due to worries around controversy.
Olsen goes on to describe the conversation she had with Ward and the difficulties around portraying LGBT characters on media directed towards children:
“And I said, ‘Are they going to do it on the show at all, or can we say anything about it in the book?” And he’s like, ‘I don’t know about the book, but in some countries where the show airs, it’s sort of illegal.’ So that’s why they’re not putting it in the show.”
