Tips and tools: Pamper your pet this summer

For all the friendship pets provide, living with animals can have a few unpleasant aspects. These tools and tricks make it easier on both of you, so the time you share is nothing but love.

Tip: Many dogs are terrified of thunderstorms. Some vets recommend playing a CD of thunder sounds when it’s not raining, to gradually accustom a pet to the sound. Having a kennel handy or a dark place to crawl into soothes a dog’s natural instinct to hide in a den when he’s scared, and turning on a TV or radio can provide more familiar human voices instead.

Tool: The Thundershirt – If you’ve got a nervous pet, these jackets for dogs and cats help soothe anxiety during thunderstorms, trips to the vet or days when you’re away, by hitting pressure points.

Tip: Hot or cold pavement can irritate or injure a pet’s feet. In the summer, go on walks in the morning or evening, and in winter, try to walk in the afternoon when the ground has warmed.

Tool: Musher’s Secret – Designed to protect paws from ice and snow, this soft wax also helps in summer heat – protecting against sun-baked asphalt.

Tip: On walks and hikes with a dog, remember to bring extra water for your pet. Exercise and panting speed dehydration, and your dog can’t tell you when she’s thirsty! Offer her something to drink so she’ll be less likely to drink from creeks and puddles that may contain parasites or infections that can make your dog sick.

Tool: Handi Drink Water Bottle – The 17 oz bottle that snaps into a water dish is perfect for walks, hikes, vacation and camping so you don’t have to be pouring water all over Fido’s face. It also folds up and clips to clothing.

Tip: Almost everybody agrees the most inconvenient thing about having a pet is the poop. But if you provide a proper healthy diet – and avoid feeding your pet packaged junk food that isn’t for animals – not only will your pet stay healthier but the clean-up process won’t be nearly as foul.

Tool: Geno’s Choice bags – On walks, poop’s less of a problem with these waste bags – the bone-shaped holder attaches to a leash and stays a safe distance from your nose.

Tools come from Chuck and Don’s Pet Food Outlet, in Cherry Creek, Littleton, Centennial and Aurora.
