Martin Shkreli arrested on security fraud charges

Martin Shkreli, who may be one of the most hated men in 2015 by the LGBT community, was arrested Thursday morning by the federal authorities. The pharmaceutical entrepreneur and former hedge fund manager who has been widely criticized for drug price gouging has been charged with securities fraud.

His charges date back to when he was hedge fund manager and running the biopharmaceutical company Retrophin — not the price-gouging controversy that has propelled him into the national spotlight and he garnered infamy.

In September, Shkreli, who owns Turing Pharmaceuticals, bought the rights to Daraprim and immediately hiked the price more than 5,000 percent. Daraprim is considered part of the standard treatment for toxoplasmosis, a potentially life-threatening parasitic infection. It is also used to treat people with compromised immune systems, like AIDS patients.

The price of Daraprim, which costs roughly a dollar to make, went from $13.50 a tablet to $750 overnight.

He was arrested in his Midtown Manhattan apartment, according to a law enforcement source. Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn were expected to hold a news conference on the charges later Thursday.

In other words, his shady past is catching up with him.

In 2011, Shkreli started Retrophin. At the same time, he was working for the hedge fund MSMB Capital Management. In 2014, he was ousted from the drug company after being accused of stealing money to pay off clients from the hedge fund.

“Shkreli was the paradigm faithless servant,” Retrophin’s complaint against Shkreli reads. “Starting sometime in early 2012, and continuing until he left the company, Shkreli used his control over Retrophin to enrich himself and to pay off claims of MSMB investors (who he had defrauded).”

When asked about the lawsuit earlier this year, he said: “The $65 million Retrophin wants from me would not dent me. I feel great. I’m licking my chops over the suits I’m going to file against them.”

Really, queen?
