Don’t let a hangover rain on your (Pride) parade

The thing to remember about a hangover is that there is no cure-all that will fix the morning-after blues with a few herbal pills and a glass of water. However, research and experience shows that if you follow these simple steps, you will be in better shape than when you woke up with that piercing headache and nausea stirring up last nights dinner. In my previous profession as a bartender, I’ve done my fair share of experiments to see what truly works the best.

Fluids: water, juice or sports drinks with plenty of electrolytes
Water is nature’s simplest and best element to consume to cure many common ailments. Alcohol dehydrates the body, leaving few beneficial fluids for the body to function at its best. Before you go to bed and as soon as you get up in the morning, drink a Nalgene bottle full of that quality Colorado water. Juice is another great option – after the water – however stay away from acidic juices like orange juice, and opt for apple juice instead.

Tea made with fennel, centaury leaf or reliable peppermint
For hundreds of years herbs and teas have been used to cure hangovers. Sip on a mug of peppermint tea to settle the nausea and soothe your whole system.

Wheat grass
Taking a couple ibuprofen (ADVIL) often does the trick to re-boot and take away the aches. However, if you prefer to do it naturally, a shot of wheat grass has the same healing effects.

Tiger Balm
This is an ancient method for calming an achy system. It has been used for headaches, stomachaches, heart-burn and muscle pains for centuries. Try dabbing a bit on your temples for headache relief.

The hair of the dog
Although less popular from a health expert’s point of view, having a drink that you had the night before is a quick way to get some instant relief. Try mixing beer with tomato juice, or a premium vodka in a bloody mary. Tomato juice is known for killing a hangover. Sip slowly, and let the “hair of the dog” make your hangover melt away.
