Summer concerts are canceled due to COVID-19, but that doesn’t mean the music must stop. On Monday, July 20, Lightshade, Colorado’s premiere cannabis dispensary—is hosting the fourth installment of its Virtual420Party series, headlined by the legendary turntablist DJ LORD from Public Enemy. The online event benefits the Black Lives Matter organization, with the audience encouraged to contribute through a virtual tip jar.

“For many of us, concerts are a quintessential summer activity. Music brings us together and energizes us,” said Lisa Gee, director of marketing & CSR, Lightshade.

“When large gatherings including concerts were canceled due to the pandemic, we immediately began brainstorming how Lightshade could bring the cannabis community together in the virtual space and make a difference at the same time. We had such a positive response from the first Virtual 420 event—not only from the community but also from the local artists and musicians—that we committed to holding the events on a monthly basis through the end of the year. The event on July 20 will be very special, and we are honored that DJ LORD will headline.”

Lightshade’s Virtual event, this year more of a 720 than a 420 party, will be live-streamed on Twitch, giving participants a front-row experience as DJ LORD and other musical artists drop fresh beats. Live chat rooms will also be open to build solidarity and camaraderie, while participants will be encouraged to give to the virtual tip jar to support Black Lives Matter’s work.

DJ LORD joined Public Enemy in 1999. LORD brings formidable turntable skills, delivering high-energy, multi-genre sets that earned him numerous DJ battle titles. LORD is also outspoken about the need to address police brutality and systemic racism across the United States.

Lightshade has recently expanded its retail presence in Denver with the acquisition of craft cannabis retailer Sacred Seed. The purchase (5885 E. Evans Ave., Denver, CO 80222) grows Lightshade’s number of dispensaries to nine. Lightshade has dispensary locations in Aurora, Denver, and Federal Heights.

Selecting Lightshade as Sacred Seed’s buyer was an important decision for the local, mom-and-pop dispensary owners who wanted to make sure their values aligned with the ultimate purchaser. Lightshade is one of the last, independent dispensary chains. This was a major factor for Sacred Seed co-founders Jennifer Kilbourne, Jeremy Kilbourne, and Gabriel Gaston, who built one of Colorado’s original and beloved dispensaries with a lot of blood, sweat, and tears.
