Denver gay man announces bid for state House seat

A southeast Denver gay man has announced he’s running for a seat at the state legislature.

Paul Rosenthal told Out Front Colorado he’s running for Colorado House District 9 as a Democrat.

If elected, Rosenthal would join other out state legislators Sens. Pat Steadman and Lucia Guzman and Reps. Mark Ferrandino and Sue Schafer in 2013 pending their re-election. All are Democrats.

Rosenthal is a special education and language arts teacher at a youth correctional facility, and has also taught in Denver Public Schools.

Rosenthal has already garnered the support of  state Sens. Joyce Foster, Steadman, Evie Hudak, Denver City Councilwoman Robin Kniech, and more than 100 Democratic Party activists and neighborhood leaders throughout his district, he said.

“Community leaders and neighbors are supporting me because I have a track record of building coalitions and getting results,” Rosenthal said in a press release.  “I’m running because our state is neglecting our education system.  As a teacher, I see it every day. We’re all facing tough times, but education is the key to our future success.”

He’s also won the support of the man who currently holds the seat Democrat Rep. Joe Miklosi. Miklosi is running against U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman for his 6th Congressional District seat.

Rosenthal has ran for this seat before. In 2008, Miklosi defeated Rosenthal in the Democratic primary.

State House District 9 encompasses most of southeast Denver. Its basic boarders are east of Interstate 25, south of Mississippi Avenue, north of Interstate 225 and west of Parker Road. However, those boundaries are likely to change after a bipartisan commission charged with redrawing state house and senate district boundaries every 10 years finishes its business in October and is approved by the Colorado Supreme Court.

Rosenthal will officially kick off his campaign at 5:30 p.m., Sept. 27 at Beau Jo’s Pizza, 2710 S. Colorado Blvd.
