The Irrepressibles’ new single “Be Wild!” celebrates LGBTQ+ eroticism and joy in a music video that centers the queer gaze. The music video follows singer Jamie Irrepressible on a walk at night along the streets of London, passing by a chaotic cast of queer individuals before having an anonymous, sensual encounter in a warehouse.
Singer and composer Jamie Irrepressible explains, “‘Be Wild!’ is set in the streets of my stomping ground of Salford & Manchester—It’s a kind of soundtrack for walking the streets about homosexual adventures. It’s full of the sunshine of liberation with a touch of northern swagger.”
The local dance and rave scenes were critical in developing Irrepressible’s musical style, inspiring him to push beyond the classical and rock roots he established in his childhood. His compositions have since evolved to include dance, rock, and electronic elements alongside classical strings and orchestral sounds, creating a unique “baroque pop” style.
Director Joseph Wilson partnered with The Irrepressibles on the “Be Wild!” music video following a previous collaboration with the band on their music video for “Yo Homo.” Wilson describes “Be Wild!” as “a love letter to the 80s, to the cruisers, the sex workers and drag kings and queens. It’s a voyeuristic perspective into our world that celebrates our identities and indulges in the eroticism of queer culture. It’s about homosexuality, the joys of gay sex, about being an outcast and being wild.”
Jamie Dermott—known in the music world as Jamie Irrepressible—is a composer, songwriter, and producer whose queer identity is foundational in his music. His lyrics include themes of gay love, heartbreak, sexuality, mental health, and other topics relevant to the LGBTQ+ community. He and his music became a part of LGBTQ+ history in March of 2014 when he performed “Two Men in Love” at one of the UK’s first legal same-gender weddings. The Irrepressibles’ notoriety grew further in 2022 when their track “Most Beautiful Boy” was featured in the Netflix series Young Royals.
