The Frock Destroyers Release Debut Album, ‘FROCK4LIFE’

The Frock Destroyers

We know them, we love them, and fans could not get enough of them.

The Frock Destroyers, consisting of Baga Chipz, Blu Hydrangea, and Divina de Campo, first debuted on the inaugural season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, where they performed their hit single “Break Up Bye Bye” during an episode’s main stage challenge. Receiving critical applause and praise, the song made herstory by hitting number three on iTunes and landed a spot on the U.K. Top 40 at number 10, becoming the first top 10-hit on the U.K. charts to be performed by a drag group.

Now, the queen trio is back with their debut album, FROCK4LIFE. Released via World of Wonder Records, the album features “Break Up Bye Bye” as well as new tracks like “Frockmatica,” “Big Ben,” and “Fame Whore.” The album’s first single, “Her Majesty,” was released in late November.

OUT FRONT had the pleasure of chatting with Baga, Blu, and Divina to talk more about the album and why they decided to reunite.Hello! Thank you all so much for taking some time to chat with me, and congrats on your debut album, FROCK4LIFE! How exciting is this for you all?
Divina de Campo: It is amazingly exciting! We cannot believe the opportunity that we have been given. Some people release an album, and there are only two good songs, but we have an album, and all of the tracks are banging!

Blu Hydrangea: And we have been verified by the fans. They have heard the songs, and they are into it from start to finish. That is exactly what we wanted.

Baga Chipz: I have not seen one negative review. We are rising up in the charts, and we are just killing it.

As we all know, The Frock Destroyers were born out of a main stage challenge on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK where you sang “Break Up Bye Bye.” Did you ever anticipate that the song would receive such praise? I mean, you landed in the UK Top 40.
BH: Divina always says she never really expected it, but as soon as I finished on the stage, I knew something would happen. I don’t know what it was. Maybe it was euphoria from getting through; maybe it was knowing that we were at least not going to be in the bottom. We all saw what Vivienne, Cheryl, and Crystal did, and it was not great.

Let’s be honest, it was shit [laughs]. I was like, something is going to happen. I saw my little Mp3 player have “Break Up Bye Bye” on it, and I showed my boyfriend because he needed to hear this. He needed to hear that I was not even auto-tuned on this track. I knew something was going to come of it. I did not quite think Top 40, but we are grateful!

BC: It didn’t just make Drag Race history, but it made drag history because we are, like, the highest drag act on the U.K. chart.

So, the fans are the reason why you all came back together to create FROCK4LIFE?
DdC: Absolutely. At DragCon UK, none of us were expecting the reaction that we got. I thought we would get a decent reaction, but the whole place grounded to a halt and turned to the stage. The whole place. It was insane. Like, 10,000 people were watching, and that had not happened all weekend for anybody else.

BH: [Laughs] Baga was on the stage on her own earlier. You’re saying no one else got an audience.

DdC: [Laughs] They got an audience, but not like us. The whole place came to a halt!

BC: If you remember, I went on right before The Frock Destroyers. So, I think they all came for me and just stuck around. You already released the album’s first single, “Her Majesty.” How has it been received?
BC: Everybody has loved it, especially when the video came out. Everyone was like, wow, they were gagged. Everyone looked amazing, and people were thinking, oh my God, Baga’s had a glow-up. She’s not looking like a scrub anymore. They loved Divina’s high notes; they loved Blu’s beats, but for some reason, I was always caught with food. I don’t know what they were trying to say.

BH: It was kind of like a throwback to “Break Up Bye Bye,” so we wanted to show that we were not going in a completely different direction. You still have the three queens that you saw on the show. We are still just as camp as ever, but now we know what we are doing, and we don’t have, like, 24 hours to do it.

DdC: Exactly, and that was one of the things. The music was received amazingly. Everybody was like, love this, love this, love this, can’t wait for the video. Then, the video was like the next step, and everyone went wild for it. Since Beyoncé has done all these video albums, that is what people want. They want a video to go along with the track. You have to give the children what they want!

Why did you choose “Her Majesty” as the first single to be released?

DdC: It just felt right. It is similar enough to “Break Up Bye Bye” in terms of the beat and stuff like that. You can still dance to it, but it has a little bit of everything in there. It is also very British. There are a lot of British cultural references in there, and it solidified us as a British group. We are not trying to be anything that we are not. We are just three British women doing our thing.

BH: The funny thing is, when we first entered Drag Race, it was Baga first, then me, then Divina. Then with “Break Up Bye Bye,” the verses went Baga, Blu, then Divina, and then by chance in “Her Majesty,” it goes Baga, Blu, Divina. So, I feel like it was a fit. It was meant to happen. It was a perfect single because it is a throwback to what we are most popular for but showing that we have improved, and we are going in a more pop direction.

BC: We are not pop stars; we are bop stars.

Do you think you may have opened a door for other drag groups to be listed as mainstream?
DdC: No, I don’t think so. They will never compete with us [laughs]!

BC: Why do you want a McDonald’s burger when you have three pieces of prime steak? Roughly, two pieces of prime steak …

DdC: And one piece of mutton!

BC: But, in all seriousness though, people have been inspired by it. The world is your oyster. Do not let anyone tell you no. Do not let anyone tell you that you can’t. Be like, I want to do that, and I am going to make my dreams come true. Hopefully, we have inspired a lot of drag queens in music because they have been using our songs.

BH: They are?

DdC: Imagine if we got royalties from every one of those! What can we expect next from The Frock Destroyers? I hope you will release more music after this album.
BC: We’ve got dolls; we’ve got a movie; we’re doing everything! We are doing world domination.

DdC: We are doing everything, and everybody as well!

Before we wrap up, what would like to say to your fans here in Denver?
DdC: Watch out because we are going to be there as soon as we possibly can.

BC: We are coming to Colorado, and we are going to absolutely frock destroy the whole place. You just have to watch out because we are not just coming to Colorado. We are coming to America, and we are going to perform everywhere. The free state of Britain is coming to the United States!
