This November, Colorado voters will decide whether cannabis rights should be expanded beyond medical patients and find a legal home with those who simply enjoy it as a recreational high. Though some in the LGBT community find Amendment 64 – which would put marijuana on a legal playing field with alcohol – to be a dishonor to those who require the plant for debilitating conditions.
LGBT Americans have had one of the most prosperous four years in recent memory. I thank and credit President Obama for that.
To those who know me, it will come as no surprise that I will vote for Gov. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan in the Nov. 6 general election. Since 1972, I have consistently voted for the Republican candidate for president, although the remainder of my ballot is almost always split to support whom I consider to be the best candidate.
This November, Coloradans will play a critical role in which way direction our nation progresses – or as we see it, possibly regresses.
Colorado voters will play a decisive role in relationship recognition rights when they decide who will represent them at the state Capitol. On the same ballot, Coloradans will choose between President Barack Obama who says he still has work to do, and his Republican challenger Gov. Mitt Romney who thinks Obama’s wasted four years.
Vote! It’s vital in every election if our republic is to function as it was intended. But do more – join me by giving cash and/or time. Don’t simply sit back and leave your civil rights up to others. I am one who truly believes in action, not reflection. Much comes from simply showing up.
Colorado has eight out state legislative candidates on the ballot this year – five new faces and three incumbents. Colorado’s other out legislator, Sen. Lucia Guzman, D-Denver, is not up for re-election this year. Two of the candidates, Democratic Sen. Pat Steadman, the incumbent, and Republican Michael Car, in a race for the first time, are running against each other. If 7 of the 8 candidates win, 8 of Colorado’s 100 seats in the General Assembly will be held by out LGBT candidates, giving Colorado one of the top 3 most LGBT-inclusive legislatures in the U.S.
