Poll Finds LGBTQ+ Adults Lean Democratic But Aren’t Satisfied

A recent poll found LGBTQ+ people prefer Biden to Trump but are not satisfied with the state of democrats.

Data for Progress conducted a survey from March 8 to 14 to gather information about LGBTQ+ people’s political opinions. The online survey gathered responses from 873+ LGBTQ+ adults and considered age, education, gender, and class to uncover differing opinions regarding the upcoming election.

The poll discovered that 57% of the participants had a favorable view of the democratic party, while 36% had an unfavorable view. Similarly, 51% of participants have a favorable view of Joe Biden, while 46% have an unfavorable view.

Unsurprisingly, LGBTQ+ reported higher support for the democratic party as opposed to the republican party. Only 22% of participants have a favorable view of the Republican party, and 77% have an unfavorable view.

Participants are divided in if they believe the Biden administration is exceeding or failing to meet expectations, and 45% of participants believe the administration is doing better than they expected, while 47% believe it is doing worse. Results from trans participants are less divided, with 52% saying it is worse and 37% saying it is better.

Though there is division regarding if Biden is doing better or worse than expected, the majority of participants agree with a lack of satisfaction with the democratic party’s effort to protect trans and queer Americans. Only 24% of LGBTQ+ democrat participants believe the democratic party is doing enough to protect LGBTQ+ people, 17% of which are trans themselves while 70% of LGBTQ+ democrat participants, 80% of which are trans adults, said the democratic party should be doing more to stop anti-trans legislation.

There is a difference in enthusiasm about this upcoming election based on age. The younger generations are less enthusiastic than older generations, with 47% of participants ages 18-24 being enthusiastic about this election than previous elections. Enthusiasm gradually rises per age group and reaches its highest for participants ages 56 and up, with 83% of this demographic more enthusiastic about this election than previous ones.

This poll grants insight into the minds of LGBTQ+ voters. Most favor the democratic party but believe the democratic effort to keep queer and trans Americans safe should increase.
