Puerto Rico Governor confirms marriage equality is here to stay

Puerto Rico Governor Alejandro García Padilla has assured the people of Puerto Rico that marriage equality will remain the law of the land, despite U.S. District Court Judge Juan Pérez-Giménez’s decision Tuesday to uphold a same-sex marriage ban in defiance of last year’s Supreme Court decision.

Just two days ago, Pérez-Giménez ruled, in a 10 page decision, that Puerto Rico didn’t have to honor the Supreme Court’s decision because it’s technically an unincorporated territory and therefore not under full jurisdiction of the Supreme Court.

Padilla disagreed. Yesterday, he released a statement that clarified in Puerto Rico will follow the Supreme Court and First Circuit Court of Appeals rulings that marriage bans are unconstitutional.

A translation of the statement reads:

The fundamental right to equal marriage has been validated and ordered by the Federal Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in Boston.

In that sense, I will respect the determinations of higher courts that, thankfully, order a different proceeding to that Judge Pérez-Giménez proposed.

Let’s add Padilla to the list of politicians that are standing in our corner.
