PA High School Students Organize “Anti-Gay Day”

Students from Pittsburgh-area high school, McGuffey High School, are being investigated for creating “Anti-Gay Day” in an attempt to harass LGBT classmates.

The homophobic campaign was created in response to Friday’s Day of Silence, when students stop speaking for a day to draw awareness to anti-LGBT bullying.

The instigators spread the word to fellow students at McGuffey High School that if they didn’t like gay people they should wear a flannel shirt and write “anti-gay” on their hands to show solidarity.

“It hurts me to see how rude and cruel, and some of these people were my friends before this started,” said McGuffey High student Zoe Johnson. “Yesterday, there was pushing, and posters hung on homosexual students’ lockers. Teachers were having to run out and take them down,” continued Johnson.

According to WPXI, some of the teachers tried their best to protect the students by running out and taking down the posters before anyone saw them. And the Superintendent, Dr. Erica Kolat, has also issued this statement.

[On] April 16, 2015, allegations of harassment were brought to the attention of our administration. McGuffey School District, along with school police officers, continue to investigate all allegations. We will follow our Student Code of Conduct, and file legal citations, as warranted. We resolve to ensure that all children can grow and learn in a safe, supportive environment free from discrimination.
