Matt Kailey, influential community leader and former Out Front editor, passes away

With Matt Kailey’s passing, Colorado’s LGBT community has lost a legend.

Kailey was an influential trans activist, award-winning author, and beloved professor. He had been featured in a number of documentaries, including 2005’s Call Me Malcolm, and appeared on both national and local news to educate the public about the transgender experience. His heartfelt, yet uniquely humorous, books Just Add Hormones: The Insider’s Guide to the Transsexual Experience and Teeny Weenies and Other Short Subjects were both Lambda Literary finalists. Kailey also served as the managing editor for our very own Out Front Colorado for eight years, and created the popular blog Tranifesto. Always keeping extraordinarily busy, Kailey inspired countless students at both Red Rocks Community College and Metropolitan State University of Denver. In 2012, he was honored as Red Rocks Community College’s “Part-Time Instructor of the Year.”

An endlessly fascinating and courageous man, even Chaz Bono cited Kailey as an inspiration to come out and share his own story publicly.

Still, despite his achievements, one would be hard pressed to find a person so humble and kind as Kailey.

Kailey is said to have passed away Saturday night from heart failure. Arrangements for memorial services are being made. Out Front will update with any information regarding public celebrations of his life as it becomes available.
