Fort Collins’ Lambda Center to close,
The Center to open satellite office in Fort Collins

The Lambda Community Center of Fort Collins will close at the end of this month, Out Front Colorado has learned. In its place, The GLBT Community Center of Colorado, based in Denver, will open a satellite office there Jan. 3.

The Lambda Community Center will close at the end of December. The GLBT Community Center of Colorado, based in Denver, will open a satellite office in its place.

Lambda’s board of directors voted yesterday to dissolve the organization Dec. 13, said The Center’s Chief Executive Officer Carlos Martinez.

Martinez said the decision to dissolve Lambda and open an office of The Center comes after six months of discussion between the two organizations.

A merger was discussed, however, because of Lambda’s outstanding liabilities it was decided this was the best option, Martinez said.

“We will continue to offer the same programing,” Martinez said. “And we hope to expand.”

Lambda currently employees one part-time person. Martinez said he hopes to add a full time person and expand on youth and elder services.

However, the first step will be to conduct a community needs assessment and put together a Northern Colorado advisory board.

“We want to be respectful of the Northern Colorado community and their needs and desires,” he said.

The announcement of Lambda closing follows news that the IRS had seized the LGBT community center’s bank account earlier this year. Lambda had canceled its June Pride event, the first warning there was a problem.

“The IRS swooped in and levied our bank account,” Amanda Keller told Out Front Colorado in October.

The IRS began to look more closely at the Lambda’s finances after finding errors in their payroll taxes.

But since the IRS’ involvement at the Lambda, Keller said the organization’s debts are now paid off.

Martinez said Pride would return to Fort Collins, Sept. 8, 2012. The later date will allow students at Colorado State University to participate, he said.

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly identified Carlos Martinez as the Chief Operating Officer of The Center. He is the Chief Executive Officer.
