New Recycling Service Ridwell Helps Colorado Waste Less

The recycling service Ridwell launched in the Denver metro area just over a year ago. Now, more than 4,000 local customers have jumped on board with a focus on wasting less.

Metro area households in the Front Range often struggle to dispose of items not deemed acceptable by their city’s recycling programs. Ridwell offers a simple solution: For a small fee, Ridwell will pick up over 40 items, such as plastic bags, lightbulbs, batteries, and house paint, on a bi-monthly basis for recycling and reuse by their partnering organizations.

With one partner per item type, Ridwell ensures that items are reused and recycled appropriately. Customers can also dispose of items in one additional category each month. These categories include things like electronic devices, holiday lights, sports equipment, and winter coats. By keeping common but hard-to-recycle items out of our landfills, customers make a direct impact on sustainability. Over the long term, this helps protect our planet.

“Over the last year, we have diverted 100,000 pounds of material from the landfill and over 4 million plastic bags,” says Rebecca Hayes, Ridwell’s general manager.

Ridwell expanded their recycling services in March, which are now available in Boulder, Superior, Louisville, Lafayette, and Gunbarrel. These communities are known for eco-conscious households that are mindful of the environment. With city and county zero-waste goals in mind, Ridwell’s expansion was due to the high demand for their services.

“Boulder is a well-known and respected community made up of households that are eco-conscious and mindful of the environment,” says Ridwell Founder and CEO Ryan Metzger. “Ridwell supplements Boulder’s extensive waste reduction efforts and provides residents with a convenient, responsible solution to help keep common household items from unnecessarily being sent to the landfill.”

Ridwell is committed to complete transparency and publishes details about their local partners and where the recycled items will wind up. Featured partners in Denver and Boulder include WeeCycle, SustainAbility, and WeDon’tWaste.
