Michael White Mountain: Traveler, veteran was cherished by many

Michael White Mountain, a former Denver resident known and cherished by many within the local LGBTQ community, died in his McLaughlin, South Dakota home March 22, 2013. He was 52.

Born May 10, 1960, White Mountain spent his childhood in his hometown of Pine Ridge, South Dakota before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1979. White Mountain was honorably discharged from the services in 1983, and began working towards a degree in business administration. Upon graduating from Nettleton College in Sioux Falls, SD, White Horse relocated to Denver.

However, Denver was just the start for this bright, ever–curious, and always–compassionate man. White Horse travelled around the country, living everywhere from New York to Nebraska, taking care of friends and family members in need and broadening his career path and goals. White Horse worked for the banking industry in Denver, the Lakota Times, the Chadron Native American Center, the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of America, and the Teton Times.

Michael always had a smile for anyone and everyone he came into contact with. He was helpful and respectful towards the elders, happy-go-lucky and very caring for his family. He was the best uncle and grandpa to all his nieces, nephews and grandkids. He will be greatly missed by friends and family and all who knew him.

Graveside services for Michael White Mountain were held Saturday, March 30th at White Mountain Cemetery in McLaughlin.
