As a seasoned scene queen in arts and music circles, I had the privilege of sitting down with the incomparable Laganja Estranja, to discuss her latest single and music video release.

If you’re not already familiar with Laganja, she’s a force to be reckoned with—a drag queen, choreographer, and musical artist best known for her appearance on Season 6 of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

But for now, we’re here to talk about her latest artistic endeavor: a single and video released on 420 entitled “Daily Basis.”

Reflecting on the initial reception of her latest release, Laganja shares, “It’s definitely been probably my lowest analytically when it comes to numbers of things, which I think can be pretty discouraging. But at the end of the day, I’ve learned that the music industry is always shifting and changing and growing.”

Despite the initial numbers, Laganja remains undeterred, emphasizing her commitment to her craft. “It’s been two years since I put out music. So I think a lot of my audience doesn’t actually know that I make music. So if anything, it’s just made me be more determined to continue to finish this album that has been in the works for years and years and to deliver more music content before the end of this year.”

Now, let’s talk about the music video because it’s truly a cinematic experience. Shot at Sin Spaces in North Hollywood, the video transports viewers to a vibrant Japanese-inspired setting, complete with bustling streets and lively markets.

Laganja explains, “We wanted to do it in downtown, and when we found out how expensive permits were going to be, we realized that we had to find a location that either looks like outside, or that we could make it look like outside. So I was thrilled when we found the space.”

What’s particularly impressive about the video is that it was shot entirely in one take—a feat that required meticulous planning and coordination. Laganja and her longtime collaborator, Robert Hayman, were determined to showcase her skills as both a performer and choreographer.

“We both love one take shots because it’s more like live theater,” Laganja explains. “And that’s sort of both of our backgrounds.”

But the video isn’t just about flashy choreography and stunning visuals. It also tells a story—a narrative that unfolds with each frame. Laganja shares, “We wanted there to be some sort of like Michael Jackson story vibe, so that it would feel like a short film as opposed to just a music video because the song is pretty short.”

As for the song itself, it’s the epitome of a summer jam—catchy, upbeat, and perfect for Pride season, which is just around the corner. Laganja teases, “I definitely have some things on the books … I am going to be working with the Out Loud Festival.”

And beyond her music and performances, Laganja is also an outspoken advocate for trans and cannabis rights. “I am an activist both for trans rights and cannabis rights,” she affirms. “And I continue to just be honest and vulnerable.”

In a poignant moment during our conversation, Laganja shared a personal revelation about her evolving relationship with cannabis. She disclosed that since coming out as transgender, her reliance on cannabis has shifted dramatically. Formerly a habitual user, she now finds herself less inclined to medicate as frequently.

Laganja reflects on her journey, acknowledging that her cannabis use once served as a means of numbing herself from her own truth. However, living authentically as a trans woman has brought her newfound happiness and fulfillment, rendering the need for frequent intoxication unnecessary.

While she still indulges occasionally, particularly to aid in relaxation and sleep, her perspective on cannabis has matured, aligning with her journey towards self-acceptance and sobriety from other substances like alcohol. This candid admission underscores the transformative power of embracing one’s identity and the profound impact it can have on personal habits and well-being.

In conclusion, Laganja Estranja is more than just a drag queen or a reality TV star—She’s a multifaceted artist with a passion for pushing boundaries and challenging norms. And as she continues to evolve and grow, one thing remains clear: She’s here to make a difference, one song and one performance at a time.
