JK Rowling Donates to Anti-Trans Organization

The billionaire author of the beloved children’s series, Harry Potter, has taken up the Dark Arts, using the magic of money to cast harmful spells on the LGBTQ+ community.

JK Rowling recently donated roughly $89,000 to an anti-trans organization with the goal of challenging Scotland’s legal definition of a ‘woman.’ For Women Scotland (FWS), a Scottish women’s organization, has been in court against the Scottish government in opposition of the 2018 Gender Representation of Public Boards Act. The former legislation supports gender equity on public boards and offers trans-inclusive recognition through a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC).

For several years now, Scotland has advocated for trans recognition while these trans-exclusionary radical feminist (TERF) organizations like FWS and other ‘gender critical’ campaigners argue trans rights undermine women’s rights. FWS feels the act “threatens cisgender women’s rights in general and their place in single-sex spaces.” Rowling, alongside FWS, argues against transgender women who have a GRC, contesting the 2010 Equality Act and claiming the need to separate the legal rights of women and transgender women.

Since 2019, Rowling has publicly renounced the trans community. She has been known for spreading anti-trans propaganda, writing demeaning essays and supporting other transphobic activists. An infamous anti-trans tweet of hers went live in October 2023, denouncing Scotland’s enforcement of anti-hate crime law. “I’ll happily do two years if the alternative is compelled speech and forced denial of the reality and importance of sex. Bring on the court case, I say. It’ll be more fun than I’ve ever had on a red carpet,” she tweeted.

Trans activist Tom Harlow makes a good point. He writes, “Are you aware this TERF organization in Scotland along with £70K donation from JK Rowling are trying to change equality law. How can we stop this from even being debated in court? How can we make sure trans rights are protected and not up for constant legal threats by TERFs with too much money and time on their hands?”

It’s ironic how the same woman wrote a heart-warming tale about a boy who changed the wizarding world despite years of being bullied and abused because for his differences could be so harmful. Although anti-trans organizations like FWS continue spreading anti-trans sentiments, the Scottish parliament continues to make positive strides for the LGBTQ+ community. Eat slugs, Rowling.
