Is Catwoman Bisexual in ‘The Batman’ Movie?

Catwoman

Zoë Kravitz, who plays Catwoman in the new Batman film, The Batman, revealed in a recent interview with Australian outlet Pedestrian TV that her portrayal nods to the character’s bisexuality.

Even though Catwoman is bisexual in the comics, she has consistently been portrayed as a heterosexual woman in the films. Many fans approached the new Batman film wondering whether or not they would finally see Catwoman as part of the LGBTQ community.

One particular scene in the film piqued the interest of Pedestrian TV‘s Matt Galea and prompted the question to Kravitz.

In a scene, Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz) enters her apartment in search for Anika. While searching for her, she calls her “baby,” but in other scenes throughout the film, Anika is referred to as Selina’s friend.

Galea asked Kravitz and the director of The Batman, Matt Reeves, if this potential nod to Selina’s sexuality was intentional. Kravitz replies, “That’s definitely the way I interpreted that, that they had some kind of romantic relationship.”

In a separate interview with Reeves, he was asked the same question to which his answer was, “(The film is) very true to the character of Selina Kyle. She’s not yet Catwoman, but all the elements of how she’s going to become Catwoman are there.”

Reeves hedged on whether the film intentionally portrays Selina as bisexual.

“I don’t think we meant to go directly in that way, but you can interpret it that way for sure. She has an intimacy with that character, and it’s a tremendous and deep caring for that character, more so than a sexual thing but there was meant to be quite an intimate relationship between them,” Reeves adds.

While this is a step forward, many fans of the LGBTQ community hope to see Catwoman’s sexuality explored and displayed more overtly in future films

The Batman is now playing in theaters.
