I Cry, You Cry, We All Cry for Sadboy Ice Cream!

Sadboy Creamery: A Magical Culinary Journey

In the delectable world of artisanal ice cream, Chef Michael Kimball stands as a true magician, artfully crafting each scoop at Sadboy Creamery. This micro-batch ice cream is more than a treat; it’s a symphony of love and nostalgia, boasting flavors as vibrant as the chef behind it.

Chef Michael and his now-husband’s journey to Denver, Colorado, reads like a vivid tapestry—a blend of hard work, determination, and a kaleidoscope of colors and flavors that define his dream. Originally hailing from the rainy city of Seattle, Washington, the seedling of the Sadboy dream took root on a melancholic day. “One rainy day, I was just feeling sad, so I decided to eat ice cream and do some crying while listening to Hilary Duff.” And so, a dream was born.

Michael and Austin met at Utah’s prestigious Brigham Young University when he was just 25 years old where, amidst studies and life, they found love with each other. In a time when openness about one’s sexual orientation was sadly frowned upon, Michael’s romance with Austin flourished. Their love, however, was too radiant to hide, leading to a day when they were spotted holding hands and subsequently asked to leave the school.

Determined to embrace change, the couple ventured to Denver, Colorado, where Michael embarked on the next chapter of his culinary journey at the esteemed Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts. Prior to Sadboy, his culinary expertise found expression in various forms—restaurants, bakeries, catering, and teaching at Stir Cooking School, Sur La Table, and Sticky Fingers Cooking. Today, he continues to craft culinary wonders at the Savory Spice Shop in Denver.

Inspired by his food chemist mother and shared moments watching shows likeAmerica’s Test Kitchen, Sweet Tooth, and RuPaul’s Drag Race. Michael’s culinary dreams flourished. “I love experimenting with recipes and trying to make them better,” he shares.

Denver PrideFest has been a canvas for Michael and Austin to celebrate,  as they parter with the organization for the Pink Parties, the parade and festival, and dancing at Tracks. A special creation called Rainbow Unicorn Sherbet paid homage to Pride and the LGBTQ community.

Michael’s culinary artistry combines gelato, custard, and ice cream-making techniques, ensuring flavors that dance on the taste buds and a super-rich and creamy texture.  Weekly creations include delightful flavors like Froot Scoops Ice Cream, Dirty Earl Ice Cream, and Salem Sister Sherbet.

Beyond the kitchen, Michael finds joy in staying healthy—bike riding with his dog Piper in a backpack, conquering Spartan races, Tri-Fecta challenges, and even having fun swimming in his mermaid-tail. Fun and relaxation with Austin and friends involve dancing, sharing meals with friends, picnics, and savoring the culinary genius of Chef  Natascha Hess of the  Ginger Pig.
