In the Spirit: Five of Denver’s Pride-perfect cocktails

Denver’s Pride-Fest is undoubtedly our pride and joy – a weekend to remember what our community is all about and where the future may lead us. So why not spend some time (or lots of time) celebrating? We’ve tapped five of our favorite Denver-area cocktails – and the bars that create them – for sipping on Pride weekend. Cheers!

Linger

{2030 West 30th Avenue • http://lingerdenver.com}

Who doesn’t love this concept- from famed restaurateur Justin Cucci? Following in the footsteps of beloved Root Down, a Highland hotspot, Linger treats guests to warm and curious surroundings at the once-was Olinger Mortuary venue, with views of downtown rivaled by none. Climb up onto the rooftop patio and linger with one of our favorite libations on a sunny afternoon: The Moscow Mule. It’s a simple, cooling, and satisfying treat with only three ingredients: vodka – or gin, if you’re feeling frisky – ginger beer, and lime juice. Yum.

Avenue Grill

{630 East 17th Avenue • http://avenuegrill.com}
Avenue Grill has long been a staple on 17th – and a gathering place for gays and straights alike. The culinary handiwork of Chef Andrew Lubatty is legendary, as are the premium Grey Goose martinis that are frequently sipped alongside them. Classy, smooth and satisfying, the AG Martini is like none we’ve ever tried, and that’s saying something. We recommend this for a sumptuous evening out Saturday night before things get really crazy post-parade on Sunday.

X Bar

{629 East Colfax Avenue • http://xbardenver.com}
When Jr.’s closed this past year – may she rest in peace – it left a void in the social sphere of many LGBT folks. Thanks to X BAR, that void has been filled – the part bar/part dance haven we were all hoping for. No doubt you already have your favorite cocktail pegged, but we suggest thinking outside the bottle, Sunday morning.

Gallop Cafe

{2401 West 32nd Avenue • http://gallopcafe.com}
It wasn’t that long ago that we took a breakfast ride with owner Glen Baker of Gallop – a liquor-laden affair that seduced us with fish-bowl-sized Bloody Marys. Never have we ever indulged in so full a liquid diet: skewered pickles, onions, caperberries, and banana peppers kick the peppery libation up a notch, making it the perfect drink to cut through rich hollandaise or decadent, thick-cut French toast. And, unlike some Blood Marys, these come with beer chasers. Hangover, be gone.

Lime

{multiple locations; http://eatatlime.com}
Nothing does a body good like a salty-sweet margarita. And while there are plenty of spots around town to indulge in this tequila treat, the one at Lime is hard to beat. It stands to reason, right? Nestle up to a basket of the city’s best chips and salsa, and order a house margarita to wile away the afternoon on Friday – a happy hour lead-in to the Pride’s weekend festivities. If you’re feeling particular pekish, we recommend the flautas app to stave off hunger. At least until you hit the next bar, anyway.

Home-Style Celebrations:

Well it’s always fun to be Pride-filled with others around town, there’s nothing quite like an evening in with friends – and a good cocktail. Should your inner mixologist crave some creativity, consider mixing up a few of these Long Islands for guests, before or after the real fun starts: 1 part each vodka, rum, tequila, gin, and Triple Sec. Add that all to a glass with 1-1/2 parts sweet-and-sour and a splash of Coke. Shake if you’re Bond, stir if you’re not, and sip to your heart’s content.
