Cheap Eats & Discount Suds

Pharrell ain’t got nothin’ on our happy (hour). We took a look at some of Denver’s best to fill your chow tank without dipping into power-bill money. Come with?

Sushi Hai

This Highlands Square gem has been holding strong for more than 15 years thanks in part to one helluva happy hour. With $2.25 to $9.50 aps and rolls, you can feel free to splurge all you want while keeping your honor in tact. … until you hit the $2.50 sake bombs. Sushi Hai also hosts a number of late-night events that’ll throw a shake into your normal going-out routine. Hint: comedy open mics and an EDM night round out the experience. H.H. everyday from 3:30–5:30pm.

Lena

An affordable way to dig into this upscale Latin kitchen. Good drinky-poo specials and great prices on tacos. Perfect for starting the night off with a hot date alongside some hot (read: spicy) foods. This place was also voted Westword’s Best Afternoon Happy Hour of 2015. H.H. is from 4–6pm Monday thru Friday.

Jax Fish House

Fresh seafood is hard to come by in the middle of Colorado. Jax offers a number of tasty fish-centric fare for us land-lockers. We’re talkin’ gumbo, peel-and-eat shrimpies, and oyster shooters. For those less inclined to eating ocean creatures, the bacon-fat chicken wings are so good they’ll haunt your dreams. In a good way. Wash it all down with sweet and boozy strawberry lemonades for $5. Happy hour 4–6pm daily.

Adrift Tiki Bar

YES! An island-ish getaway where you can finally wear those Hawaiian shirts you thought were a mistake, but now make you really glad you wandered into Tommy Bahama. Get classic mai tais for 5 bucks, amongst other tasty bevs, all served up in a little face just for your pretty face. Food is standard Polynesian/American Chinese (think crab wontons and SPAM TACOS). After enough cocktails, you’ll forget you didn’t eat a big dinner anyways. Monday thru Thursday 5–7pm and Friday thru Saturday 4–6pm.

Charlie Brown’s
Piano Bar and Grill

CB’s is a Cap Hill institution with fantastic deals on burgers and beers and free sing alongs. The giant patio is open all year round and your off key singing will be in good company with their dueling pianos. Sometimes, you just gotta smoke butts and listen to Billy Joel. H.H. everyday from 4–6:30pm and again 10:30–12:30pm. So nice, they do it twice.

Linger

If you haven’t heard of Linger yet … well, I’m sure you have. But what you might not know is that this LoHi spot used to house a mortuary. Things have changed, but you’ll go STIFF (puns!!!) when you see their menu and prices. $4 beers and $5 cocktails will keep you living for another day. Linger has a wide selection of snacks for 5$: sesame bbq taco, pork belly bun, crispy cheese, and shishito peppers. H.H. prices are only available in the bar and roof, 4–6:30pm daily.

Lou’s Food Bar

Classy spins on comfort food, super tasty and crazy cheap. Best gem in the neighborhood. Beers and spirits for no more than 4$ and lots of yum-yums to keep the whole crew happy. Pigs in a blanket, wings, and other classics are up for grabs. During your visit, be sure to hit one of Lou’s many old school entertainments — shuffleboard, foosball, etc. This is like a hipster’s retirement fantasy hangout. H.H. everyday from 2–6pm (loads of time!) and again from 9pm to close.

Tony P’s

Happy Hour! Every. Damn. Day. Head to either location for cheap drinks, pizzas, and snacks. Also, very exciting pitcher deals and homemade sangrias. Try the Highlands “Happier” Meal — a big slice, a burr, and a shot for eight bucks. Yes please, Tony P’s. Monday thru Friday from 4–6pm and 9–11pm AND Saturday and Sunday 11–6pm and 9–11pm. So pretty much, all the time.

Hamburger Mary’s

Mary’s has good food served up with flamboyance, frivolity, and fun. Happy hour features drink and food specials every weekday from 3–6pm. Depending on your chosen night out, expect some kind of activity to get your blood pumping and your stomach full. Karaoke, trivia, and a drag show will surely spice up your mid-afternoon to early evening before you have to hit the pavement again tomorrow. Mary’s makes even Mondays better with all-day happy hour and 80s pop videos. Nothing pairs so well with a big juicy burger.

Matador

The awesome decor in this place is enough to draw you in, but the food and drinks will have you coming back for more. There are fiery lanterns, bull skulls, and a wall of more than 200 tequilas, some of which are featured during happy hour. You can’t go wrong with a 4-buck marg! The Matador also features made-from-scratch Mexican cuisine. We recommend the Texas Size Nachos to split or as a gigante feast-ante for one. Or the Habanero Prawns or Grilled Stuffed Jalapenos or Ancho-Chile Spiced Wings … the list continues. Visit H.H. everyday from 4–6 or 10–1am.
