Trevor Project Releases Article on Trans, Nonbinary Mental Health

Trevor Project Transgender Nonbinary Mental Health survey

The Trevor Project has released a new, scholarly article discussing the mental health amongst transgender and nonbinary youth. “Understanding the Mental Health of Transgender and Nonbinary Youth” will be published in the Journal of Adolescent Health in their 2020 June Pride issue. It is also available now online. The article does not solely look at mental health, but also possible factors contributing to the decline of it.

In total, 25,000 people participated in the survey. The demographics of those polled includes people from the ages of 13 to 24 who are either lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning youth. The statement that transgender and nonbinary youth have poor mental health compared to their cisgender peers can be backed up by the results of the survey.

“Prior to this study, there was a clear lack of research on the differences in mental health and suicidality within different sub-groups of LGBTQ youth. These results underscore that transgender and nonbinary youth are particularly vulnerable to poor mental health outcomes and suicide risk compared to their cisgender peers within the LGBTQ community. Furthermore, they show how LGBTQ-based discrimination and victimization contribute to these increased mental health disparities,” said Amy E. Green, Ph.D. (she/her pronouns), Director of Research at The Trevor Project.

In comparison to the results of other gender identities, transgender males reported higher rates of depressive moods and suicidal attempts or strong consideration. Eighty-six percent of transgender males have depressive moods according to the survey. Alongside such harrowing numbers, 62 percent stated they have strongly considered suicide, and 35 percent have had attempted taking their own life in the past 12 months. Transgender males are not the only ones with higher rates of suicide consideration. Accompanying that list are transgender females and nonbinary youth assigned female at birth.

One factor of such high rates of struggling mental health among trans and nonbinary youth can be pinpointed to this demographic also having higher rates of discrimination than other groups surveyed. Discrimination is being targeted against an individual’s gender identity or sexual orientation.
