A recent survey conducted by the Trevor Project concluded one in five queer youth identifies with labels outside of lesbian, gay, and bisexuals. The National Survey on LGBTQ Mental Health also gave insight as to the mental health of young people in this demographic.

The Trevor Project is a crisis intervention resource specifically catered to queer youth. They also have information covering a wide range of topics such as sexual health, coming out, and HIV/AIDS.

The survey concluded that over 100 sexual orientations and gender identities were mentioned among the 34,000 queer youth who completed it. The questions in the survey alsos related to suicide attempts and mental health.

In addition to the listed identifications, 39 percent of LGBTQ youth in the survey have considered attempting suicide in the past 12 months. This percentage increased by 15 percent when it was presented to transgender and nonbinary youth.

The high rate of suicide consideration in the survey could be tied to people attempting to change the way they identify. One in three queer youth stated someone has tried to change their sexual orientation or gender identity. The Trevor Project also noted “57 percent of transgender and nonbinary youth who have undergone conversion therapy report a suicide attempt last year.” Queer youth who have reported being physically harmed or discriminated against have higher instances of suicide consideration than those who have not.

In a time of crisis, there is a silver lining. Our youth say they can still find safe spaces online. LGBTQ youth reported 76 percent are likely to reach out to a crisis intervention resource through text or chat.

It has never been a secret that queer youth have faced a variety of difficulties in life due to their orientations and identities. This only further stresses the importance that crisis resources have within our community and the work the world still has left to do for inclusion.
