Demi Lovato Teases New Punk Rock Album

Demi Lovato has had quite the year. First, they publicly announced via their podcast, 4D With Demi Lovato, that they identify as nonbinary and further stated they were officially changing their pronouns to they/them. The announcement came as a series of tweets, which Lovato credited to a year-and-a-half of “healing and self-reflective work.” It also came after the successful singer announced even earlier last year that they are pansexual.

But more recently, Lovato revealed a new part of their identity that was relatively unexpected, to say the least. Them covers the singer’s alleged move away from pop music and into the realm of punk rock. That’s right—the “Cool for the Summer” and “Confident” singer is saying goodbye to their pop songs of the past and moving on to uncharted territory.

Last week, Lovato shared an Instagram post with the caption, “A funeral for my pop music,” and also wiped their entire feed clean of all previous posts—essentially anything that would tie them to pre-punk-era times. The eight posts that do exist in Lovato’s page offer a very stereotypical, punk-focused aesthetic.

Page Six reports that the singer also teased samples and clips of their new sound on their Instagram stories around the same time the “funeral” post went up, and fans—celebrities and otherwise—are undeniably excited.

The announcement of a new artistic direction comes shortly after Lovato completed another rehab stint at a facility in Utah, Page Six also reports. The 28-year-old’s journey towards self-discovery is thought to have ties to their nearly fatal overdose more than three years ago.

But whatever their reason, Lovato continues to persevere with new music, styles, and discoveries that bring them ever-closer to their most authentic self. And really, what more could we want? Oh, and Demi, if you see this, please come back to Denver.
