Dance and Twerk to Chrystian Lehr’s Newest Single

Chrystian Lehr

A master of his craft, R&B singer Chrystian Lehr aims to create music that is fresh and exciting. His latest single, “Twerk Song,” is a prime example.

Following his highly praised mashup of Brandy’s “Borderline” and Jazmine Sullivan’s “Pick Up Your Feelings,” “Twerk Song” is a modern-day anthem about feeling comfortable in your own skin and having the confidence to be completely and unashamedly yourself. It is also the first single off his forthcoming project, Offline III, the latest installment in his EP series.

Performing in talent shows by the time he was 5 and winning awards for his songwriting skills and musical compositions by the time he was 8, Lehr showcases his full range of talent on “Twerk Song,” with the track highlighting not only his agile vocals, impressive range, and crisp runs, but also his pen game and knack for addictive hooks and irresistible melodies. Lehr is a force to be reckoned with and continues to carve out his own artistic lane.

Lehr took some time to chat more about “Twerk Song” with OFM, as well as growing up with a love for music and bisexual visibility in the industry.

Can you begin by telling us more about the concept and inspiration behind your latest single, “Twerk Song?”
“Twerk Song” is really a song about self-love. I know it’s kind of corny, but it’s true [laughs]. It came about through quarantine; we were all doing crazy stuff on social media, and I was on TikTok. I did some twerk videos, and they ended up going super viral. It was kind of a thing where it caused so much controversy that I was like, “I need to make a song about this.” So, I ended up writing this song to go along with it because I wanted to do something fun. The world was kind of opening back up, people wanted to be outside, so it is a play on that situation.

How has the song been received by audiences?
So far, it is doing very well. I have heard so many good things, and the video is dropping soon. I am excited about that. It will come out at the end of July. The song is going viral on TikTok, so I am excited and glad everyone is loving it.

You say “Twerk Song” is a modern-day anthem about feeling comfortable in your own skin and having the confidence to be yourself. How does this track differ from all the other songs with a similar message?
I think you can really see the message in the song. It is really a club record, a feel-good R&B record, but at the same time, you can instantly see that encouraging message throughout the song. Like, not caring about what anybody thinks, not caring about who’s watching, and just be comfortable in your own skin. Be yourself. I would say the blend of everything makes it inspirational, and you still want to play it at the club.

“Twerk Song” will also be on your forthcoming EP, Offline III?
Yes! Offline is the third installment of my EP series, and it will be coming soon. “Twerk Song” is the first single off that.

Do you have a release for the EP?
I don’t have a release date for the full project, but I have another single lined up that is going to be dropping pretty soon. I told everybody that I was going to drop a couple singles first just to get everybody acclimated. Just the way the industry is now, people’s attention spans are so short. So, I am going to keep giving them content. I did a lot of work throughout quarantine, and still working. I just want to get it all out there.

Since you’re bisexual, do you like to incorporate bisexual themes into your music?
This video coming out is kind of the first time that you see that from me. Most of my videos are just considered very normal because that is just what I grew up seeing. Even when I was signed, I think it was kind of just placed that way, and when I became independent and started controlling my own content, it still felt like that was the thing to do.

That is how I started. Now, in a sense of where I am and feeling more free, I was like, “I should start being more inclusive with the people who are in the video.” This video that will be coming out, it has a huge cast, and we have a lot of different types of people. I want to do that more moving forward, and I am going to continue pushing the boundaries. At this point, it is fun to me.

Do you believe there is a lack of bisexual visibility in music?
I think we see bisexuals a lot when it comes to women. I think it is encouraged and kind of welcomed, but when it comes to men, it is still a very hush-hush type of topic. Nobody wants to talk about it. So, I do think it is lacking on one end, and I think it is kind of a double standard a little bit when it comes to that. There are so many bisexual, out women that make music. They are killing it, and I love all of them, but men are just not commercially received as well. That is what I have seen.

Have you always had a passion for singing and songwriting?
Yes. I don’t think I ever wanted to do anything else. My parents told me I sang before I could talk [laughs]. I have been singing my entire life, and I have always wanted to do that. It has never been optional. That is how I have always felt.

What do you hope listeners take away from your music?
Moving forward, I want feel-good music. Things that are attached to your emotions and make you feel something. Whether it makes you feel like you want to dance, cry, whatever—I want to make the same impact some of my favorite artists make on me when I hear their music. It’s tied to something that makes me want to keep playing it. So, that is what I hope. Test the heartstrings and make an impact.

Can you tell us a little bit more about your musical aesthetic?
It is definitely R&B, but I like to incorporate a lot of different themes. I do not like to be boxed in. There are different elements to all different genres, but I would say the core of me is R&B. That is how I grew up, that is what I grew up listening to. It will always be R&B based.

What more do you hope to accomplish with your musical platform?
I want to reach more people. My message has really become about self-acceptance and being yourself more. I hope that theme expands, and I want to be very inclusive. I want everybody to feel like there is a safe place within my music, my shows, and the things that I am doing. I feel like I have kind of created a safe space on my social media platform. Come as you are.

What does the rest of 2021 look like for you?
Busy [laughs]. I am shooting a lot of videos, a lot of content, and preparing to roll out my next couple singles. The holidays are coming too. So, busy, but a good busy! I’m excited.

Before we wrap up, are there any other upcoming projects or anything else you would like to mention our plug?
