Dan Levy to Direct and Star in Netflix Film ‘Good Grief’

If you’re like us, you might still be mourning the end of the iconic sitcom Schitt’s Creek, which saw its final episode in April 2020. While we endlessly rewatch the series and hope for a new movie or reboot, it looks like star and co-creator Dan Levy is pursuing his next endeavor, with his directorial debut of Netflix’s new film, Good Grief.

Accord to a Netflix news release, the new film follows a bereaved widower on a weekend of self-discovery in Paris, France. Levy plays Marc Dreyfus, who is grief-stricken after his partner passes away. The tragic event unearths long-buried grief over the passing of Marc’s mother, so he heads to Paris, alongside his two close friends, to get back on his feet.

Of course, Marc is bound to get more than he bargained for.

Good Grief is a cautionary tale about friendship and loss and all the mess that comes with it when the truth is something you’ve evaded for most of your life,” Levy says. “It’s funny; it’s bittersweet; it’s a project that’s helped me work through my own grief. And I hope it does the same for other people as well.”

Along with Levy, the film has a star-studded cast, including Ruth Negga, Himesh Patel, Luke Evans, Celia Imrie, Arnaud Valois, David Bradley, and Jamael Westman. It’s the first of several projects Levy is set to develop, via a multi-year overall deal with Netflix.

The film was originally billed as a rom-com, but Levy told the Hollywood Reporter in June that he decided to widen the scope beyond just a couple focus as he kept writing.

“It ended up having more to do with friendships in your 30s than actual romantic relationships. What would a love story look like if it was really about a group of friends in their mid-30s? The clarity that comes with age and the time you’ve spent with these people,” he explains. “There’s romance in the movie, obviously, but really, it’s a love story about friendship.”

Unfortunately, we don’t have a set release date from Netflix, but we can’t wait to see more from Levy soon!
