Tim Kaine sits down with Tyler Oakley and learns the meaning of ‘YAAS’

Tyler Oakley, the queer YouTube star who has quickly become an advocate for LGBTQ rights, sat downTim Kaine, the Democratic nominee for Vice President, in the latest episode of The Tyler Oakley Show.

Can we start by pointing out that the VP nominee is sitting down with a gay man, and not trying to take away his rights. The same can not be said for the Republican Vice President nominee Mike Pence, who has targeted LGBTQ people in his home state of Indiana for years. During his reign of Governor, Pence successfully established a religious freedom bill that allowed businesses to discriminate against queer people. A self-described “Christian, a conservative, and a Republican, in that order,” the former member of Congress was a prominent conservative figure in battles over marriage equality and equal rights in the last decade.

In 2006, as head of the Republican Study Committee, a group of the 100 most-conservative House members, Pence rose in support of a constitutional amendment that would have defined marriage as between a man and a woman. Citing a Harvard researcher, Pence said in his speech, “societal collapse was always brought about following an advent of the deterioration of marriage and family.” Pence also called being gay a choice and said keeping gays from marrying was not discrimination, but an enforcement of “God’s idea.”

He opposed the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. He rejected the Obama administration directive on transgender bathrooms. He refused to adopt needle exchanges in the state, allowing HIV to escalate at an alarming rate as 20 new cases of HIV were being diagnosed each week in one County.

Wondering why we went on a long tangent when we should be laughing at Tim Kaine saying that his campaign is ‘on fleek?’ Queer people need to see the man that could hold one of the highest public office positions in the country, and what it could mean for our rights in the coming years.

Now, we can all admire the lovable ‘stepdad’ that is Tim Kaine. In the short, fun, informative video we see Kaine and Oakley chat about dad jokes, baes, squad goals, Throwback Thursdays, Hillary’s “on fleek” campaign, and the correct pronunciation of “yaas.”

Oakley asked: “There are some people who know they’re not here for Trump, but they’re still kind of unsure about Hillary. If you could talk to them right now, what would you say to them?”

Do you believe in climate science or don’t you? Do you believe in LGBT equality or don’t you? Do you believe in immigration reform. Do you believe that we ought to make voting easier not harder? Do you believe women should be able to make their own healthcare choices or not. Hillary and I do, Donald Trump doesn’t.

Hillary and I are with you.
