Stuff Gay People Like: About This Blog

Now that we’ve had some time to get a feel for each other I’ll let you know a bit about Stuff Gay People Like. By now you’ve read at least two or three entries – in the world of gay relationships that’s equivalent to, what, dinner and a movie? A one-night stand? Surely I can at least tell you who I am and what I’m doing here.

First off, if you want to know where we’re coming from on SGPL, this blog is going to make a lot more sense if you know of Stuff White People Like, the cultural phenomenon that this is one of many spin-offs of, and Stuff Black People Hate, which is my favorite of those parodies. SWPL is kind of a self-deprecating generalization of white yuppie/hipster culture, and Stuff Black People Hate is a hilarious rant about racism and other shit from a black perspective. (I mention Stuff Black People Hate because it applies SWPL’s idea to a minority position, which is what we’re doing here.) SGPL admires both of those but it’s not entirely modeled on either.

There are three simple factors in my philosophy as expressed in this blog. First, people can do whatever the fuck they want if they aren’t causing harm. Second, I will make fun of trends, and expect you to have a sense of humor about it.

Third, I will beat the hell out of any individual or group of people that picks on another, be it factions within the gay community, or straight society picking on gay people. That could be muscle jocks thinking themselves superior to our fem friends or the Moral Majority’s lies and stereotyping about LGBT people. Both cases are examples of a more “accepted” or powerful group using that acceptance to dig on someone else to boost their own egos. I think it’s awesome if you’re muscled, waify, butch, queeny, black, Christian, Puerto Rican, jock, conservative, Caucasian, radical or intersexed – when it comes to humanity there is very little I don’t love, but I fucking hate people shoving privilege in others’ faces.

As for me, I’m a 24-year-old gay guy in Boulder. I went to CU, and you can count me among “people who got stuck in Boulder after college” and desperately want the hell out, which is not to say Boulder isn’t a great college town and community, but it is a black hole that people get stuck in.

When I say “Gay people” as pertaining to the title of this blog, I almost always mean gay men. It’s not because I hate lesbians, it’s because I’m not a lesbian and don’t claim to know what it’s like to be or date them. However, I love when lesbians read this blog.

So how do I decide if something is a thing that “gay people like?” Realize that nothing I mention can apply to every single gay man or even to most of them. If I list something gay people like, it means I’ve seen it happen more than once, lets say more than twice. That said, I am young, white, grew up in the suburbs and now dwell in a middle-sized metropolitan area (Denver area), and my perspective is biased towards things that are visible from that experience.

Stuff Gay People Like is a blog within a blog, published entirely within OFCB, for mutual benefit.

If you read something potentially offensive and are not sure if it is satire or a position I am actually taking, it’s probably satire. Look to other posts for clues.
