India’s first trans band covers ‘Happy’ by Pharrell

In India, trans women are known as hijras. Hijras are a social group, part religious cult and part caste, who live mainly in north India. They are culturally defined either as “neither men nor women” or as men who become women by adopting women’s dress and behavior. They are devotees of Buhuchara Mata, a version of the Indian mother goddess.

They are also known as the third gender. And while the country recognizes them, and their communities across south-east Asia date back more than 4,000 years as they appear in ancient texts as bearers of luck and fertility, they are still widely discriminated against.

It’s hard for hijras to find secure and stable housing and jobs, and often find refuge in small communes on the fringes of cities. Within these communes, families are born and hierarchies are made. The guru is the mother, and chela’s are her daughters. These pseudo families offer support and love where they might not find it otherwise.

India’s first trans band, 6 Pack, is showing that these communities are bursting with happiness in their first video “Hum Hain Happy,” which is a cover of Pharrell’s “Happy.” Good luck getting through this video without the feeling of overwhelmingly happy feelings.
