‘Drunk History’ schools everyone on the Stonewall Riots

Drunk History, the Comedy Central series that reimagines America’s history through the words of some very, very inebriated people, just paid tribute to the start of the queer revolution in America, the Stonewall Riots.

In the six-minute clip, comedian Crissle West nurses a glass of whiskey as she recounts the day Johnson declared she’d “had enough” of the illegal police raids targeting New York City’s LGBT community, and launched the LGBT rights movement by taking “the shot glass heard round the world” and throwing it into a mirror.

“It was bad enough being black, but add in a queer identity and then a queer gender identity too? It was a lot. And she still faced it!”

The skit centers around the real-life heroes who “threw the first brick,” so to speak— LGBT trailblazers Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, played by trans actresses Alexandra Grey and Trace Lysette, respectively.

As per usual with Drunk History, the clip is hilarious as we see West slur her way through the story. It’s also a more accurate portrayal than Roland Emmerich’s 2015 drama Stonewall. Check it out!
