Coming Out to Mom: the Jamie Lee and Ruby Curtis Story

Ruby

The much-beloved actress Jamie Lee Curtis recently revealed that her daughter Ruby has come out as trans. Ruby has stayed out of the lights and public view for much of her life. Her mom, who played in Halloween Kills and other major movies, says,”It’s learning new terminology and words, and I’m going to blow it; I’m going to make mistakes. I would like to try to avoid making big mistakes.”

Ruby’s Story

The larger-than-life star shared her support for her daughter in an interview with People Magazine. In the interview, Curtis says, “It’s speaking a new language.” Curtis’ daughter Ruby shared her story as well, saying, “I’m happy to talk about my experiences now. Me coming out has nothing to do with my mom being famous. I’ve tried to stay out of the spotlight for many years, or at least done my best to. I’m happy to be more visible if it helps others.”

Curtis went on to talk about her role in supporting Ruby during the interview.“I’m not proselytizing, and I’m not trying to force-feed something to people. I’m simply saying, ‘This is our family’s experience.’ I am here to support Ruby. That is my job.”

Curtis talked about her experience with supporting Ruby through her transition and the impact it has had on her life, saying, “I’m a grateful student. I’m learning so much from Ruby. The conversation is ongoing. But I want to know: How can I do this better?” Ruby stated that “You’ve done the most you can, and that’s all I want. Helping others is something everyone should do.”

Ruby’s conversation with People is inspiring for those struggling with acceptance from their parents and the community. Overcoming the many obstacles that face trans people can be tough, but this shows there is hope. Ruby’s story is a guiding light to the trans community and for those needing a light to follow.

Curtis left a powerful statement on helping other trans people find their voice: “If one person reads this, sees a picture of Ruby and me and says, ‘I feel free to say this is who I am,’ then it’s worth it.”

We are excited to see and follow Ruby’s story and where it will take her and her mom.
