BLACK GIRL / WHITE GIRL, HYBRID SPASM, and New EP “PRIZMATIC”

We are officially in peak festival season and with that, a buffet of new music is simultaneously hitting all the popular streaming platforms. Not missing a beat, Netherlands-based duo BLACK GIRL / WHITE GIRL (BGWG) has officially entered the chat. Celebrating their newly established independent label, new EP, and their artist residency, Ty (she/her) and Karin (she/her) sat down to chat with OFM about their legacy in electronic music.

The duo met in 2012 and almost instantaneously established a synergistic vibe with one another that led them through the process of artistic expansion and musical expression. Drawing upon diverse backgrounds and ancestral roots spanning Curacao to Israel, Ty and Karin draw upon varied inspirations in their creative process. When asked about their influences, they both state that they are influenced mostly by a certain type of energy, feeling, or sound. In the case of their new EP “PRIZMATIC”, the pair cite inspiration from the layers and textures incorporated into street art. Drawing the parallel between this form of visual art and the intersectionality of life, BGWG mixes together electronic tracks that have interlaced these concepts together.

With the release of “PRIZMATIC” looming on the horizon, Ty and Karin are also elated to announce their artist residency with PAG, a multimedia arts collective located in Tel Aviv. PAG supports safe spaces for artists that span all aspects of gender, race, sexual orientation, and expression. With an expressed mission to combine music, different forms of art, and people to sustain a community that stands at the forefront of Tel Aviv nightlife, the collaboration of BLACK GIRL / WHITE GIRL with PAG seems the perfect fit.

Not to go unmentioned, HYBRID SPASM is the name of the label recently established by these beats creators. Founded upon the ethos that perfection is a myth and that authenticity is more important than perfection, Ty and Karin hope to support emerging artists who share a passion for making “creative and fearless music”. With a focused intent on promoting diversity, inclusivity, and individuality in art, the label promotes “hi NRG music for delusional minds”.

Although Ty and Karin have traversed this world, playing to crowds across the globe, they reflect upon how these experiences have molded them as individuals and artists. Both express a deep gratitude for being able to live the life that they live. Through their continued efforts to live a prismatic existence, BGWG hopes to encourage others to do the same. Above all, they emphasize the importance of staying present and communicating a message of hope and solidarity during especially troubling times.

And what better way to unify these intentions than through the element of music? After all, music is magic, and “PRIZMATIC” is a celebration of the magic that shines from within. The EP officially dropped on June 16, 2023, as the first official release on their label HYBRID SPASM. You can listen to it now on SoundCloud.
