988 will be the New Suicide Hotline Number

988

The Federal Communications Commission recently made a big decision about whether 988 should be rendered the new suicide hotline number as of July 16. Now, the commission has approved the number, and this change will be implemented and in use within two years. Nine-eight-eight will send callers to the mental health hotline.

The original, 11-digit number will still be in use even when the three-digit number is cemented. Much like calling 911 for an emergency, 988 serves as a way for people to call during a mental health crisis. This change can be a life-saving tool for people.

The Trevor Project has released data on its largest survey that targets LGBTQ youth. The survey includes questions pertaining to mental health, access to mental health services, housing instability, conversion therapy, and even more benefits.

Forty percent of participants have reported considering attempting suicide in the past 12 months. The rates increase with individuals identifying as transgender and non-binary.

The Trevor Project is thrilled that the FCC continues to recognize the importance of suicide prevention and highlights the need for special services for LGBTQ youth. Chairman Pai’s order notes increased rates of suicidal ideation among young LGBTQ Americans and provide recommendations for stakeholders to work in collaboration with government groups to ensure these at-risk communities are being properly served by the Lifeline.

“Moving forward, The Trevor Project urges Congress to pass the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act, legislation that will enhance the Lifeline’s infrastructure prior to the implementation of 988. Today’s FCC order, in combination with the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act, would guarantee a well-funded Lifeline that can best serve LGBTQ callers and save American lives,” Vice President of Advocacy and Government Affairs for The Trevor Project Sam Brinton states.

This change was previously delayed due to carriers wanting a larger time frame to adjust implementing the 988 number.

The FCC has designated 988 as the new nationwide number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to be completed by July 2022. In the meantime, please continue to use 1-800-273-TALK (8255) to connect to the Lifeline.
